Frequently Asked Questions About Bio-Clean

Bio-Clean

What is Bio-Clean?

Bio-Clean
Bio-Clean® is a special combination of natural bacteria and enzymes that DIGEST dead organic waste found in your plumbing system: grease, hair, soap scum, food particles, paper, and cotton.

Bio-Clean® will not digest or have any effect on inorganic materials such as plastic pipe. It does not produce heat, fumes, or boiling like chemicals do.

Bio-Clean® is safe for people, plumbing, and the environment

How Does Bio-Clean Work?

Bio-Clean
In nature all animal and vegetable matter, from insects to mighty oaks, is broken down and recycled into plant food by enzymes and bacteria. Bio-Clean uses this same principle to biodegrade animal and vegetable waste in pipes.

Like all living things, bacteria must eat to survive. Fortunately certainly types of bacteria will use for food the grease, hair, soap film and all the organic waste that tend to clog peoples drains.

Enzymes act like short order cooks. They prepare food for bacteria by breaking large molecules down into a size the bacteria can "swallow". Each enzyme works on one specific type of molecule. For example, the protease enzyme only works on protein. Lipase works only on fats.

The bacteria are dormant while in the jar. When mixed with water they come to life in about 30 minutes. In the meantime, the enzymes are breaking down the waste. They are very fast. In fact, they work on contact. When the bacteria revive they are hungry and each one eats its weight of waste every minute -  they never sleep! As a result of eating and growing they start to multiply through cell division. Their number will double every 30 minutes under favorable conditions.

Does Bio-Clean Eliminate Drain Flies?

Bio-Clean

Typical drain flyDrain flies are pesky, gnat-like flying insects that are commonly seen inside home showers. They are difficult to get rid of because they lay their eggs and the larvae feed on waste matter lining the inside of your pipes.  Killing the adult flies on the wall does not solve the problem because new larvae continue to hatch and grow inside the pipe.

The most effective method for eliminating drain flies is to remove their food source, and Bio-Clean is the most effective method for cleaning the inside walls of your pipes. We recommend increasing both the dosage and frequency (up to twice daily) of application in your drain and continuing for up to 10 days. Bio-Clean won't kill the drain flies directly, but it will thoroughly consume the waste they feed on, and they'll be gone. See a recent testimonial.

How Do I Use Bio-Clean?

Bio-Clean
Bio-Clean should be mixed with warm (not hot!) water and applied when no water will be drained for six to eight hours. This allows some of the bacteria time to embed themselves into the waste so they won't be washed out when water is drained again. Complete instructions are inside each container.

Periodic maintenance treatments prevent new organic waste build-up, so no more slow drains or clogs!

How can such a small amount of Bio-Clean be effective?

Bio-Clean
There are millions and millions of bacteria in each spoonful. Each one will eat its weight of waste every 60 seconds. They double in number every 30 minutes, and as they multiply they will spread throughout the entire drain system.

Will Bio-Clean work on a stoppage?

Bio-Clean
If the material is biodegradable, yes. However, in most cases, the stoppage is not caused by a blob of something in the trap. It is several feet of pipe that is filled with gunk, and it may take several days for the bacteria to eat through this long blockage. Therefore, we suggest that a mechanical cable be used to restore flow. Then begin Bio-Clean treatments to remove any remaining waste build-up. Regular maintenance treatments will prevent new build-up.

How long with it take to see results?

Bio-Clean
Some people notice improvement in a day or two. Almost everyone will see results in one to three weeks. Note: the cleaning process is not completed with the initial five-day treatment. The time is determined by the type of material the build-up is comprised of (grease, soap, hair) and the length of the lines. Hair takes the longest to digest, but it is often lodged in place by soap which will dissolve more quickly.

Should the toilet be flushed after pouring Bio-Clean into the bowl?

Bio-Clean
Do not flush for 6-8 hours. The quart of mixture poured in the bowl pushes one quart of water and mixture out of the bowl into the stack. The enzymes and bacteria carried out in the quart leaving the bowl are deposited on the gook coating the inside of the pipe. In the following 6-8 hours they embed themselves in the gunk so that when the toilet is next flushed they will not be flushed out.

Aren't chemical drain openers much stronger than Bio-Clean?

Bio-Clean
The strongest chemical in the world can't climb the side walls of horizontal pipes. Gravity makes all chemicals run along the bottom. Nor can chemicals remove much waste in vertical pipes because they flow through so quickly. The bacteria in Bio-Clean are live and will go anywhere there is food. They will remove the gunk chemicals leave behind. And most plumbers will tell you that strong acid-based drain cleaners often damage the pipe lining or joints.

Does Bio-Clean contain any poisonous substances?

Bio-Clean
No. Bio-Clean contains no acid, lye, solvents, perfume, or poisonous substances of any kind. You won't find any warning labels on the jar!

Does Bio-Clean digest hair?

Bio-Clean
Yes. However, it does take much longer than most any other organic material. In drains soap scum, skin oils, etc. bond hair to pipe surfaces. Bio-Clean digests these other materials more quickly, which releases the hair to wash downstream. In many cases pop-up drain valves in tubs and sinks come out and hair can and should be manually removed.

Does Bio-Clean stop odors?

Bio-Clean
Yes, by digesting the waste which is the source of odor. Clearing odors from garbage disposal units is a great use of Bio-Clean.

Does Bio-Clean stop odors coming from a cat litter pan?

Bio-Clean
Definitely. Best results can be obtained by washing and drying pan and then sprinkling the bottom with Bio-Clean before adding new litter and coating the top with Bio-Clean

Septic Tanks, Sewers

Will Bio-Clean attack tree roots?

Septic Tanks, Sewers
Only roots that are completely dead. Roots enter sewer pipes seeking the rich organic food supplied by the build-up. As roots feed on the waste they grow, branch out, and eventually restrict flow. Periodic use of enough Bio-Clean and water to reach the root area will eliminate the waste they seek. In this manner the use of Bio-Clean discourages root growth in sewers.

Can Bio-Clean really help a septic system?

Septic Tanks, Sewers

Absolutely - in several ways.  The bacteria in Bio-Clean are specially selected to digest a larger variety of waste, and metabolize it faster, than naturally occurring bacteria or yeast additives. Oils, fats, grease, and paper are very difficult for intestinal bacteria to handle. Bio-Clean is very effective on these materials. Bio-Clean increases solids destruction, so fewer pumpings are needed and that means money saved.

More complete digestion also means fewer undigested solids leaving the tank. These solids would otherwise form a black gooey accumulation in the leach field and prevent water absorption by the soil. Therefore, Bio-Clean extends leach field life.

RVs and Boat Holding Tanks

How often should an RV or boat holding tank be drained and retreated?

RVs and Boat Holding Tanks
Best results including odor control are obtained if drained after one week and retreated after first toilet use.

Must special toilet paper be used?

RVs and Boat Holding Tanks
No, even colored paper is OK.

MegaMicrobes Liquid

What is MegaMicrobes Liquid?

MegaMicrobes Liquid
MegaMicrobes™ Liquid is a liquid formulation of bacteria and enzymes that does not require pre-mixing. Our patented blend contains a strain of powerful (but harmless to humans and animals) bacteria called pseudomonas, not generally found in off-the-shelf biological drain treatment. This product will quickly and effectively in all home drain and pipe applications, and is especially suited for treating persistent grease build-up such as in commercial kitchens.

Is MegaMicrobes sold in stores?

MegaMicrobes Liquid
MegaMicrobes is not sold in stores - just direct online and through authorized service distributors. The product is produced in limited control quantities, not mass-produced large-scale retail shelves. Its patented formulation is produced in the U.S. by a team of microbiologists under strict laboratory control guidelines for maximum biological potency. It is one of the few products available to consumers that contains the pseudomonas bacterial strain, and without the foul odors associated with industrial-grade treatments of this type.

Should I use a dry or liquid product?

MegaMicrobes Liquid

All of our biological treament products safely degrade organic waste, and in generally they can all be used effectively in treating drains, pipes, septic systems, etc. So we are often asked which product should be used - a Bioredex powder or liquid?

The benefit of the powder product like Bio-Clean and MegaMicrobes DRY is that they are a little less expensive on a per-use basis at the home use level. You can literally get up to 100 uses out a single 2-pound jar of Bio-Clean for cleaning home drains. And although MegaMicrobes Liquid has a stated shelf-life of 1-year, the powder blends can often go well beyond that if stored dry and in non-extreme temperatures. Powder is also lighter and thus easier to ship and store.*

The benefit of our MegaMicrobes Liquid is that it goes right to work with no pre-mixing, and has more digesting power due to the presence of pseudomonas bacteria. Many people prefer to simply pour the treatment down without pre-mixing. The liquid is also well-suited to applications where daily treatment is recommended, such as in commercial grease traps or lift stations where an automated injector pump can dispense a small amount of into the waste container at a scheduled time.

*PLEASE NOTE that our dry products should never be compared to off-the-shelf liquid brands which are weaker and often contain fragrances, detergents or other emulsifiers that work against truu biodegradation. Our dry products are superior to these in cost-per-use AND effectiveness.

How can we keep MegaMicrobes actively at work in our busy kitchen?

MegaMicrobes Liquid
For consistently reducing FOG discharge over time along with its associated foul odors and clean-up headaches and expense, we highly recommend use of an auto-injection device, which consists of a small pump with with timer which dispenses a set amount of MegaMicrobes Liquid on a daily basis. Just "set it and forget it." The Pro Drain Chief auto-injector is available for purchase through this website.

Are there any restrictions to use of MegaMicrobes in commercial kitchens?

MegaMicrobes Liquid
MegaMicrobes™ is formulated to be completely safe to the environment and in fact its regular use greatly helps local water supples by effectively reducing the levels of fats, oils and grease (FOG) discharged by the facility using it.  In a few locations, old regulations may prohibit the use of any additives into commercial waste water receptacles. We can provide documentation and actual governing authorities that have certified our products for use. Please contact us for more details.
